The 49er Fan Club was originally founded in 1985 by Kent Herkenrath. At the invitation of an old classmate, Peter Ueberroth, Mr. Herkenrath became a liaison for the soccer games at Stanford University during the 1984 Olympics. That summer, while watching his sons trade and sell the sports pins that they had collected from players, a light came on that led to the most fulfilling part of Kent's career.
