- PTSD or posttraumatic stress disorder often follows a traumatic event. Rescue workers who have to remove dead bodies after an earth quake or who otherwise have to face situations where they experience horror, fear or helplessness are particularly prone to this mental illness. Symptoms are insomnia, nightmares or anger outbursts. Treatment consists of counseling with a psychologist or psychiatrist. SSRI antidepressant may also be given.
