Description

Excerpted from the website:

About Hallenbeck & Riley
My Father invented the audio visual business when he founded Hallenbeck & Riley in 1938, featuring the first affordable 16mm sound projectors and the first public address systems that schools and institutions could fit into tight budgets. He travelled New York state from Westchester County to the Niagara frontier drumming up business. He showcased his projectors by screening safety films in school auditoriums, renting the projector, the screen, the film and the operator. As more projectors were sold he invented the film-rental business (beating Blockbuster by 50 years). As that took off he needed a way to get films out and back quickly. This innovation beat Federal Express by a half century. He studied the bus schedules and shipped by greyhound. In the 50'S, he expanded the audio/visual rental business just as the explosion of suburban motels with conference facilities began. He retired at the end of 1999 after a 62-year career (Riley, by the way, did not see the potential and dropped out the first year.) Dad owned two drive-in theatres, including the Indian-Ladder Theatre in Voorheesville, with its attached miniature golf course. He Would dress up in an Indian costume to promote the theatre and on the marquee it stated, "Operated by friendly Indians." Of course, if that were true, a big casino would sit on that site today.
