- I am a reference librarian (and assistant professor) at Mississippi State University’s Mitchell Memorial Library. I graduated with my Masters in Library Science in May of 2005 from Simmons College. I moved back to Mississippi from Boston on the same day Katrina landed. Since then I’ve been trying to find my research footing, getting involved with community theater, and readjusting to life in Mississippi after 15 years “up north.” I “do” reference at the reference desk, on CHAT, in my office (consultations), on the phone, over email, in instruction classes, in restaurants and bars–pretty much “wherever they are.” I’m trying to introduce IM to our virtual reference menu right now. I think of our work as just throwing things up against the wall to see what sticks. We don’t know how our students want to communicate with us. We know they aren’t coming to the desk to ask as many questions–and that the questions they have are way beyond Ready Reference when they do. We haven’t publicized CHAT as much as we should have, but IMHO, I think IM is the way to go, anyway.
