- In 1869, placer gold was discovered in Coleman Creek near the present site of the town of Julian, Ca. Ex-confederate soldier Drury Bailey founded the town in 1870 and named it after his cousin, Mike Julian, supposedly the most handsome character in the family. The downtown area today is preserved as a historic district with many interesting buildings and locations to visit.
- The first apple trees were brought to Julian in the 1870's by James Madison and Thomas Brady.
