Welcome to Asian-Richmond.com, a resource site for Asian Americans living in the Greater Richmond area. We hope this site will evolve into an interactive page where members of the community can bond and share information.
Over the past 30 years, the Asian population of Richmond has grown exponentially to include nearly 30,000 individuals. However, unlike early immigration models-- like San Francisco, New York, and other large cities where new ethnic immigrants tended to cluster in ethnic urban neighborhoods--the new arrivals to Richmond have been relatively affluent and have generally dispersed into the suburbs. Therefore, the centralized stores and services common to Chinatowns and Little Saigons in major urban centers have never materialized. While there may be small pockets of commerce, the majority of businesses owned by and catering toward Asians remain dispersed. And since Asians tend to live father apart, children might grow up disconnected from their ethnic peers and lose their important cultural heritages.
This site takes advantage of an interest fact: Asian-American are the most-wired racial group in America, boasting a XXXX% internet access. With this in mind, we as a community can bridge the distances caused by the Suburbanization of Asians in Richmond. Over the past decade, Asians Americans across the country have used the internet to help form a collective consciousness based on shared experience. It has awoken young people to the hurdles that still remain to be surmounted in this country; it has brought greater awareness and appreciation of our ancestral cultures; and it has connected people who might not otherwise have a chance to meet.
