Atlanta Chamber Of Commerce - Welcome To Atlanta Michigan: The Elk Capital Of Michigan - Atlanta MI
Description
In 1986, Atlanta was proud to be named the Elk Capital of Michigan by the state legislature as a tribute to Michigan's largest Elk herd in the area. Every year the last full weekend in September is culminated with the Atlanta Elk Festival.
Atlanta was named by Alfred J. West of Capac, MI who saw the area while building a road here. In 1881 he bought a tract of forest land and built a sawmill. The area reminded him of Atlanta, GA, which he saw while fighting in the Civil War.
Located in downtown Atlanta on the Thunder Bay River, you will find a picnic area, pavilion, gazebo, and playground. Contact the township for hours of operation at 989-785-4186.
