- It all began in 1980 when a group of leading Bay Area women met to discuss the need for a new organization that offered a safe, supportive environment for lesbians. Leaders were Nicole Schapiro, Rochelle Dineen, Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon, and Roberta Achtenberg. On January 14, 1983, BACW was incorporated in the State of California as a nonprofit organization.
