BarCharts.com began in 1991, with Bobbie Ford’s handwritten flow chart

Title

BarCharts Quick Study Guides, Laminated Reference Guides, QuickTrain Office Training Testing

Description

The history of BarCharts is one of those American success stories about a husband-and-wife team who, in their home and while living on a very tight budget, took a simple idea and turned it into an international business. It all began in early 1991, when, as a recent law graduate studying for the Bar Exam, Bobbie Ford created, with pencil and paper, a simple flow chart of what she had learned in her Constitutional Law course. She told her husband, John, that it gave her a conceptual overview of how all the elements of the law fit together-kind of like a roadmap. When she said some of her classmates wanted copies from which to study, a lightbulb turned on in his head. If he redesigned it to be more professional looking, he thought, perhaps Bobbie's quick reference study aid and others like it could be sold in law school bookstores.

Six months later, in June, after many redesigns and conversations with bookstore managers and law school professors, the Ford's published, with borrowed money, their first 6 law school study aids: Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Torts, and Real Property. They named their company and product BarCharts® after the Bar Exam and Bobbie's original flow chart. Two weeks later, they received their first order from a law school in Arizona. That night, for the first time in months, they went out to celebrate at McDonald's.

By the end of 1992, the Fords had sold 120,000 BarCharts, expanded the line to 19 titles, were laminating them for durability and had displays in 80% of U.S. law schools. 1993 was spent developing undergraduate titles with the help of professors from Florida Atlantic University. Also that year, the Fords hired their first full-time employee. Finally, in December, the first 13 undergraduate titles were published. They called the new undergraduate titles QuickStudy® because they contained the most important things a student needs to know about the subject. QuickStudy® guides could be used in class, while doing homework and/or preparing for last minute pre-exam reviews, and also for open-book tests. Not only did that lightbulb stay lit, it burned ever more brightly.
