Barambah Ridge Winery is a story of the vision of a group of people, passionate about Queensland wine, who commit themselves to establishing a large winery and vineyards to produce some of the best wines to come out of this state.
They looked to one of Queensland's fastest and newest regions to realise this dream. The South Burnett has proven to be highly suitable to growing wine grapes. With conditions similar to the Hunter Valley, the South Burnett offers growers good soil, sufficient water and sunlight for the vines to flourish. Situated 13,000 feet above sea level, it has a number of frosts in winter that are beneficial when the vines enter their dormant phase.
In 1995, 32 acres were purchased at Redgate (near Murgon), and immediately 16 acres were established with grape varieties that were most suited to the South Burnett region. Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon were planted and trained up on the trellis using the Scott Henry system. This form of trellis has proven to increase yields and reduce the incidence of mildews that can affect the grapes. The first crop from these vines was harvested in 1997, with the wines from this vintage winning numerous wine awards.
