Title

Barney's Motel - Brandon, Manitoba Canada

Description

Barney's Motel was built before fire was discovered and it shows. They don't build anything like this anymore. Volcanic Rocks were brought in from a prison in Saskatchewan that just happened to be built on the only volcano in that province. The volcano is now hidden under the Great Sand Dunes of Saskatchewan which move every year because of the wind. Saskatchewan people - also known as "people from another place and time (mostly the past)" - also move nearly every year but the vast majority of them don't have as good a reason as the wind to blame their move on.

These chunks of Mother Nature were hand formed by blind uhhh ... volcanic rock shapers and each virgin stone was placed to form a rough wall. (maybe it's not a good idea to use the words "virgin" and "rough" in the same sentence) The entire structure collapsed just as it was nearing completion and the on site forman (warden) had the presence of mind to make up some story for the non visual volcanic rock hammering guys so they just kept on keeping on until this incredible structure was complete. It took years for the rock to cool and then of course the Great Fire happened and then it took more time to be cool again like it is now.

Heralded as one of Brandon's landmarks, Barney's Motel endured the Great Fire of 1963 as well as the Great Flood of 1963 which occured when the firefighters forgot to turn the water off. (after fighting the Great Fire) Most of our carpets have been replaced since then as they began producing small vegetables (they certainly looked like vegetables) and people began to complain about an odor of mould. Barney, always thinking of how to help others, offered a part time job to Alexander Fleming because Fleming had a small carpet cleaning business in those days.
