Description
Betta (Brisbane Electrical & Television Traders’ Association) began in June 1961 when seven small South East Queensland retailers met to consider ways of overcoming the growth in appliance retailing by the larger department store. Over the years other co-operatives merged with Betta. In 1978, the Sydney based SANTA (Sydney and New South Wales Trading Associates Pty Ltd) co-operative was experiencing difficulties, many of their members were offered membership in the Betta Group.
In 1985 Betta became a national organisation when another group, United Buying Associates (UBA) ceased trading and many of its members joined Betta.
For most of its history Betta has supported two categories of independent retailers, one operating under the Betta promotional brand of Betta Appliance Centre and the other comprised of retailers operating under their own name. From 1993 to 1996 the common brand was Betta Appliance Centres. The Betta Electrical brand was launched in 1994.
