BMSC uses METI HPS, Pediasim, ECS, Laerdal SimMan and SimBaby, and Gaumard HAL simulators and manikins. The Centre has a high degree of flexibility making it ideal for training courses tailor made to the needs of a wide range of medical professions, nurses, GPs, and students. From refresher courses to tutorials or crisis re-enactments, all levels of expertise can benefit. Simulation training has already been used extensively in the aviation industry. Repeated exposure to simulated crisis situations has meant that airline crews are not putting their classroom training to the test for the very first time in a real life disaster. The Bristol Medical Simulation Centre was the first training facility in the United Kingdom to offer this type of training geared specifically to the needs of medical and healthcare professionals, paramedics and the emergency services. Medical emergencies such as anaphylaxis, acute myocardial infarction, major haemorrhage and shock states can be created in the Centre's fully equipped operating theatre using the advanced Human Patient Simulator. Individual and team responses are analysed using sophisticated audio visual equipment in the adjoining conference and presentation room.The Centre is ideal for Advanced Life Support (ALS) and similar training, and it offers access to multimedia workstations for computer assisted learning, as well as workbench space for using part-task training devices.The facilities are also suitable for tutorial style training for personnel from a wide range of disciplines and specialities. Simulation scenarios are designed specifically to meet the needs of each group of participants, enabling every delegate to rehearse relevant procedures both simple and complex, and have repeated exposure to rare events.
