- One thing that keeps getting glossed over in news reports is the fact that Abu Musab Zarqawi, along with most people calling themselves al-Qaeda, don't have any direct ties to Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda group. Al-Qaeda, or "the Base," is about as meaningful as the name for a specific, coordinated organization as are terms like "the liberal elite," "vast leftwing conspiracy," "vast rightwing conspiracy," "the cool kids," "the in-crowd," or "the Democratic Party." Like the terrorists who attacked Madrid and London's mass transit systems, Zarqawi's "al-Qaeda in Iraq" group is wholly a homegrown operation. His organization (such as it is) gets little outside support and damned little outside recruitment help. If you hate Israel and you like blowing up innocent civilians, you can be a Qaedista too.
