About Me

As a kid, I drew pictures of my teachers. This worked to my advantage. In high school, drawing my teachers started getting me into trouble. My college classes were large enough that none of my professors even knew I had drawn them although by all rights some of those drawings should have gotten me in trouble as well. I guess my drawing has improved but the editorial content of my caricatures has soured. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

I've been working as an artist in the game industry since 1992 when I got my first game job at Mindcraft software. In those days most game art was created with a mouse, in DOS, using DPaint. Antialiasing was done by hand. We had no scanners, no Photoshop, no anything except spiders in the hallway where we slept at night because we didn't have time to go home and sleep because if we missed a deadline then the company would have gone instantly bankrupt. Well that one did anyway.

Since then I've worked for a number of game companies including THQ, and Mindscape. I started my own small 3D graphics company called Burke Studios and did that for a few years. I liked the work and my clients were great but what I had imagined as working on a laptop at the beach while sipping Thai iced teas became instead a digital version of 'The Deadliest Catch.' The frigid Arctic water of double all-nighters couldn't make up for all the fantastic health benefits of sitting at a computer all day and reducing my vision to nothing but the flickering RGB of my computer's display.
