C&W began in early 1949 when Preston Hunt, Sr., a successful San Francisco distributor, realized people dine out to enjoy foods that cannot easily be had at home. At the time, one of those epicurean specialties was the petite pea. Hunt concluded that if he could freeze the best petite peas from California and Washington states, and make them available to restaurants year round, he might have a successful new product. In February 1949, the C&W® brand was created for marketing petite peas to San Francisco’s finest restaurants.
Success was instantaneous and by February 1952 there were about 25 premium C&W® specialty frozen vegetable and fruit products being sold to the restaurant trade. Distribution was primitive; C&W operated its own fleet of delivery trucks that made regular rounds to San Francisco restaurants and eventually to independent grocers. It was indeed the independently owned food retailers and not the big chains who were responsible for C&W’s transition into a retail brand.
In the early 1950s, the frozen food section of a typical grocery store looked nothing like today’s modern supermarkets. Freezers looked like a giant chest, with a solid door on top that the customer had to slide open. C&W® vegetables shared space with frozen meat, ice cream and a few other early frozen food products. A big frozen food section meant that the retailer had more than one chest freezer.
