Description

Guatemala is a nation situated in Central America, with an area of 108,000 Km, 33 volcanoes and 19 different eco systems. To come down from a cloud forest to an almost desert like area in just a few minutes, or to leave a large city and in less than an hour to be crossing tropical jungles is quite common in Guatemala. There is a population of approximately 14 million and the unit of money exchange is the Quetzal. The official language is Spanish, but 21 different Mayan dialects are spoken. The largest city is the capitol, Guatemala City, with some 2 million inhabitants.

In regard to its history, the Mayan civilization extended through the south of Mexico, Yucatan and the northern part of Central America. It was in total decline when the Spaniards arrived. The country was conquered by Pedro de Alvarado in 1523 and independence from Spain was proclaimed the 15th of September 1821.

It is estimated that 70 per cent of the population is Indian and 30 per cent is made up of Mestizos and people of European origin.
