Description

One of the most celebrated figures of the 20th century, Winston Churchill was born on 30th November 1874 to Lord Randolph Churchill and his wife Jennie Jerome. Despite being a rebellious young man, Winston completed his schooling at Harrow and graduated to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.

He saw military action during his travels to India and the Sudan, and was involved in the Battle of Omdurman against the Dervishes in 1898. As a war correspondent in the Boer War in 1899, he was captured as a prisoner of war, but subsequently escaped across the enemy lines to Durban.

His political career started in 1900, when he was elected to Parliament as the Conservative MP for Oldham. However, in 1904 his allegiance switched to the Liberals, and he rapidly gained political credibility within this party. As President of the Board of Trade, one of his outstanding achievements was the inauguration of labour exchanges. Between the years of 1906 and 1922, he stood as MP for firstly North West Manchester and later, Dundee. In 1908, after a whirlwind romance, he married Clementine Hozier .
