Description
I live in Cedar City, UT and spend most days fishing and then build rods at night. While I specialize in light fly rods for trout I also build lots of heavy saltwater fly rods as well as technique specific casting rods, boat rods and spinning rods. If you are ever in Southwest Utah look me up and I'll be glad to take you fishing (I'm not a guide but I know where the fish are) .
Some of my favorite places to fish are the Sevier River, Mammoth Creek, Paragona h Reservoir, Quail Creek Reservoir, Newcastle Reservoir, Beaver River, Beaver Mountain Lakes and my absolute favorite place to fish is Kolob Reservoir just outside of Zion National Park.
Kolob is managed as a trophy lake where the limit is 1 fish that must be 22" to keep. a typical day will be a couple of trout big enough to keep and 1-2 dozen that aren't big enough. I have caught as many as 10 fish over 16" per hour and like all waters I have been skunked. While I like to do this with a 4 weight fly rod or when the wind kicks up use a 5' ultralite for most people I would recommend a 5 -6 weight fly rod or a med-light to medium power spinning rod with a moderate fast to fast action and 6 lb test . I would never use a casting rod to throw the tiny lures that I use for trout.
