Title

Crystal Semantics - Making Sense of Context

Description

Crystal Semantics is a division of Crystal Reference Systems Limited, providers of general reference content and internet sense engine technology. The company was founded in 2001 by Professor David Crystal, a world authority in linguistics, and managing director Ian Saunders.

Crystal Semantics has developed a new search technology called Textonomy. Unlike current search technologies, which are based solely on statistical algorithms, Textonomy uses techniques from linguistic science to determine the semantic relationships between words and the contexts in which they occur.

The ‘sense engine’ that drives Textonomy is the outcome of a long-term development program in searchlinguistics. This program began in 1986, when a classification system was devised to handle the data being compiled for the first edition of The Cambridge Encyclopedia, and was soon extended to deal with the various encyclopedias and factfinders published by Cambridge University Press and later by Penguin Books.
