- Things have gone from bad to worse for the Boston Red Sox. When the players woke up on the morning of August 18, a day they were slated to play a doubleheader to kick off a five-game series against the rival New York Yankees, the Sox sat just 1.5 games behind New York in the AL East. A decent weekend keeps them right in it; a great weekend puts them back atop the division. Instead, the Sox proceeded to lose all five to the Bombers, and five more of their next seven games to fall a full seven games off the pace. SP Matt Clement (shoulder), SP Tim Wakefield (back), RF Trot Nixon (biceps), SS Alex Gonzalez (oblique), and C Jason Varitek (knee) have been hurt for some time, though Varitek's injury has been especially devastating (they are just 8-19 since he went down). LF Manny Ramirez (knee) has missed the better part of a week. Young lefty Jon Lester (back) just went on the DL. And now the heart and soul of the team, DH David Ortiz, is in a Boston hospital undergoing tests on an irregular heartbeat. All of the injured players except Clement will likely be back on the field sooner rather than later, but at this point Red Sox Nation has to wonder if it will even matter.
