Description
Leslie Tane Hannus (Principal, Leslie Tane Design) received her BA from Colby College in 1993, graduating Magna Cum Laude with honors in English. After attending the Radcliffe Publishing Course in the summer of 1993 she began work at Random House, Inc. in the Juvenile books and merchandising department. A degree in English has many advantages, but design principles and computer design skills are not among them, so along the way, Leslie has taken several classes to supplement her BA. She completed courses in Graphic Design and Quark at Pratt Institute, Milton Glaser's Graphic Design and Personality class at the School of Visual Arts, Typography with Paul Shaw as an online course from Parsons School of Design/The New School, and seminars with Seybold Conferences in advanced Quark, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
After almost a year at Random House, Leslie relocated to Northampton, Massachusetts and a job at Impress, Inc., a design firm owned by Hans Teensma. A not-very-subtle case of idol worship followed, and Leslie credits Hans with "teaching her everything she knows about fine design." Impress' work encompasses all facets of print design and in a short time, Leslie was designing magazine features and departments, book covers, advertisements, CD covers, and more. A move back to the tri-state area and a regretful leave taking later, Leslie Tane Design, an independent full service design firm was started in 1996.
A short list of Leslie Tane Design clients includes: Simon & Schuster, Inc., Storey Publishing, Disney, Newsweek, UMass Amherst, Smith College, Environmental Leadership Program, and LEGO Systems, Inc. (Please see the client list for a more complete listing.) Along with her freelance design work, Leslie has also been teaching high-school and college print and web design classes for several years. A move back to Western Massachusetts in 1998 brought Leslie back in touch with Hans and Impress, and she continues to live and work in the area today.
