An estimated 40 percent of a commercial building's electrical energy is used for lighting. Although several programs have provided incentives for improving lighting efficiency, many building lighting systems have not yet been upgraded. If energy-efficient lighting systems were to be installed in these buildings, energy use and costs could be reduced dramatically and productivity increased.

Efficient building lighting systems use less energy than the systems in place in many of the nation's offices, plants, schools, municipal buildings, and stores. New energy-efficient lighting systems also provide better lighting quality, improving the working environment.
