Title

Shanxi Evergreen Service

Description

Evergreen operates with a strong team structure and works from three locations: Taiyuan City, Yuci City and Yangqu County. Evergreen consists of five service teams in medical, English, consulting, agriculture and economic development work and three support teams which are the office, an international school, and Chinese language learning. Finn Torjesen, the Executive Director, resides in Taiyuan, though currently on home leave in the US.

Since we are an openly Christian organization, excellence in our work provides the opportunities to reflect Christ; our ministry comes through our work. Israel’s history has powerful examples of this type of ministry in action. Both Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon contributed greatly to the countries in which they lived, even in servitude. They were known and respected for their wisdom and God-given skills and brought glory to God through their lives and their work. Evergreeners seek to live out similar lives of work and faith in China today. To the degree that we invest ourselves in the lives of those around us, we hope to reach people at all levels of society for the spiritual and physical benefit of Shanxi. All Evergreen members are committed to service long-term in China and are seconded by sister organizations that provide financial and logistical support. All members are sent out with the support and prayer backing of God's people. (back to top)

In 1988, Hakon Torjesen and Kari Torjesen Malcom, son and daughter of a Norwegian missionary couple, were allowed to visit their childhood home in China which they had left over 40 years before, after the war in which their father, Peter Torjesen, had been killed in a Japanese bombing raid. Peter, whose Chinese name was Leaf Evergreen, and his wife Valborg had opened their home and church premises in Hequ, Shanxi, to shelter up to 1,000 refugees. Prior to this they had planted churches and done medical and development work in the northwestern corner of Shanxi Province for nearly 20 years.
