The HFEA subcommittee, the Ethics and Law Committee, discussed the issues in Choices & boundaries and this was followed by consideration by the full Authority at their public meeting in Belfast on the 10th May 2006. After considering very carefully the issues around the use of PGD for lower penetrance inherited cancer susceptibility conditions, the Authority decided that it was, in principle, appropriate for PGD to be available for lower penetrance, late-onset inherited conditions such as inherited breast, bowel and ovarian cancer.
A Licence Committee will initially (for two years) consider applications for lower penetrance conditions on a case-by-case basis. No applications have been received to carry out PGD for these conditions yet but if one were received, a License Committee would consider each application individually. An Authority statement was produced following this decision and can be found below.
