- Tichy is perhaps best described as an outsider photographer. Irreparably harmed be the trauma of living under Nazi and Communist rule (though it seems clear that he suffered from other mental illness) he withdrew into his own world; a private ocean of photographs, news clippings and moldering books. With cameras made of tin cans, twine and hand-made lenses (which are works of art in themselves) he furtively snapped photos of women in his small, Czech town. A bound collection of his work was very difficult to track down. Many thanks to Katherene at the Michael Hoppen Gallery in London for helping me out.
