Griffith International Backpackers Hostel
Description
The Hostel was built with the intention to house outback children that went to high school in the town. Due to the long distances children would have to travel everyday they boarded at the hostel during the week and went home on the weekends.
The Hostel was originally called the "Griffith War Memorial Hostel" as it was built after the Second World War. Eventually it closed down due to lack of funding. With the improvement of transport, the increase of schools being built in the outlying areas and communication improvements with the introduction of the computer era, the Griffith War Memorial Hostel shut its doors.
The hostel went up for auction around the 1990's. It remained closed until 1994 when council granted permission for the transformation into backpacker accommodation.
