Gualala was the name the original Pomo Indians gave to the place 'where the water meets the sea' or 'where the water comes down'

At one time the town was spelled 'Wallala' instead of 'Gualala'. But in an earlier time when the Postmaster was reorganizing the districts he decided the town needed to be spelled with a 'G' instead of a 'W' following rules for the Spanish language. The name of the town is always mispronounced even by some of the locals that live here so don't be afraid if you say it incorrectly the first time.

Gualala is a hub of activity since it serves as the commercial center for the outlying towns from Annapolis to Elk. It is a coastal hamlet of unsurpassed beauty located in Mendocino County.
