Description

Twice NODA* Award winners (1992 Die Fledermaus, 1996 I Pagliacci), and with the programme from its 1976 production of Merrie England on permanent display at the Victoria and Albert Museum (Enthoven Collection), GOC is proud of its achievements.

Formed in 1971 with the aim of presenting a wide range of grand opera and operetta to Guildford audiences, the company's repertoire has expanded over time to encompass a variety of music including choral works, 'Come and Sing' ventures, songs from musical theatre, and at least one major staged production each year.

The mood can be light-hearted (La Belle Hélène) or more serious (Faure's Requiem); it can be ambitious (The Land of Smiles), challenging (The Rake's Progress) or more populist (Rodgers & Hammerstein: Songs from the Shows). Similarly, performance venues vary from the Electric Theatre to Chilworth Friary and Guildford's neighbouring villages such as Cranleigh, Shalford and West Horsley. The company also travels further afield and in 2005 presented the Rodgers & Hammerstein show at one of the oldest theatres in the country, the delightful Kenton Theatre in Henley-on-Thames.
