One of those I remember best was the time when a new toy plane went on sale in toy stores. As a boy back then, I wish I could have that plane, but I knew that the price was too much for my Daddy to afford. What he did instead was to fashion out of toothpaste boxes and BBQ sticks, a replica of that plane. He even invited me to help him build it. After attaching the popsicle propeller, the resulting biplane was certainly the most beautiful toy aircraft I ever had.
As I admired the product of my Dad and my own effort, the toy aircraft became less important to me than my appreciation of my dad's creativity. In the process, I learned to become creative myself in scale modling. I'm now 22 and I still build such handiworks -- a tribute to my afternoon building sessions with my dad.
In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka remembers his dad in another less appreciative way. His recollection of his dentist-father was that of endless lecturing about the harmful effects of confections. The dad was protective of his brace studded son. But Wonka only saw stinginess in his father.
