How Green Theme International Home Exchange began
Green Theme International Home Exchange was established in 1989 by Kath Botterill, after several years of preliminary research. Kath had many years of experience in the travel industry and at that time was a College Lecturer teaching Business and Travel and Tourism Studies to young adults, and a Member of The Tourism Society, the official organisation for Tourism Professionals in the United Kingdom.
As a result of hard-won publicity in the media, GTI was able to link very quickly with other international home exchange agencies who were establishing themselves around the world at that time with the objective of giving our members a wider choice of locations, balanced listings, and the most opportunities to experience an ideal home exchange vacation. We also focussed on making contacts with European agencies and communicating with them in their own language to bridge the language barrier and encourage more European participation.
It has always been our goal to promote Home Exchange as an environmentally friendly mode of travel and as a comfortable alternative to high priced hotels and organised package tours. It is a way to experience an area as a local, not a tourist, to bridge the cultural divide and make new friends, and a great way to travel with children.
