Description
The Hoofer Riding Club is one of the oldest Hoofer Clubs on the UW Campus. In the 1920s, the University Hunt Club existed as a riding club for women which was sponsored by the Physical Education Department. In 1939, there was a lack of interest in the Hunt Club because of the declining number of women riders, the fact that men could not join, and the lack of space at their Shorewood Hills stabling facility. As the financial stress worsened, the Hunt Club members decided to join the Wisconsin Hoofers, which at that time consisted of a Hoofers Ski Club and Hoofers Outing Club. And so, the Hoofer Riding Club was born.
Today, the Hoofer Riding Club (HRC) is still the official riding club of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The HRC provides it's members with a complete spectrum of hunt seat and dressage equestrian activites. The Club has a number of its own horses, and manages the Hoofer Equestrian Center which members are encouraged to help maintain. Aside from being home to seven to nine Hoofer Horses, the Hoofer Equestrian Center is also a boarding facility with 45 stalls. Any Wisconsin Union member is eligible to board their horse at HEC. The club currently offers lessons to Hoofer Riding Club members at all levels in balanced seat and dressage for a low lesson fee. Lessons are offered six days a week with two sessions each semester. Lesson sign-ups are held before each session at semester kick-offs, or at the Wednesday night socials with lessons beginning soon after.
The Riding Club also offers its members trail rides, horse shows, educational clinics, and two to three schooling shows each year. Trail rides provide a more relaxed way to enjoy the horses and the great outdoors. There are also opportunities for the intermediate and advanced rider (Senior Rider Program / Trail Certification) to ride without supervision . Advanced riders are encouraged to become Trip Leaders to lead trail rides and to study to become instructors.
