On the negative side, it means you have to deal with a music industry, music media, and young people who tell you how great the latest thing is, even though it sounds remarkably like the stuff you were listening to in the late-70s/early-80s, when it really WAS the latest thing. (I guess one more negative is that you start to sound old & bitter...)
On the positive side, you may have heard a few things along the way that haven’t been rehashed by the industry (yet) that still stand head and shoulders above most of the product that’s being released lately.
Consider Mike Watt’s career to be one of those things. As one-third of the still-great-after-all-these-years Minutemen, Mike Watt, D. Boon, and George Hurley rode the van into musical history along with SST label mates Black Flag, Hüsker Dü, Dinosaur Jr. and others. Following the unfortunate death of D. Boon in 1985, Watt & Hurley were urged to start fIREHOSE by Ed Crawford, a huge Minutemen fan. Since that groups demise 8 years later, Watt has been involved in his own solo projects, as well as playing with numerous other groups, projects, events, etc.
