The Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale Galileo Ferraris (IEN) is a public research institution operating under the responsibility of the Ministry for Education, University and Research (MIUR). It was founded in 1934, following a long tradition in the electrical sciences, stemming from the outstanding discoveries of Galileo Ferraris and the "School of Electrotechnics with Laboratory" he established in 1888.
IEN participates in national, European and international research programmes; it performs consulting activity, calibration of measurement standards, accreditation of laboratories, testing of materials, components and apparatus.
In cooperation with universities and other scientific institutes, IEN contributes to education and training of students, young scientists and technical personnel.
