Description
"It all started back in 1734" sounds more like the start to an indifferent novel than a piece of corporate history. The origins of Informa Maritime and Transport do indeed, date back that far, however, and there is a powerful line of continuity between the business founded then in Lloyd's Coffee House in Lombard Street and the global maritime news and data business, which thrives today.
The original business was Lloyd's List. Its aim was to provide news for marine underwriters about the movements of ships they insured. Had the vessels arrived in port as expected? Were they delayed? Had they sunk? From it's earliest days, Lloyd's List informed its readers.
What was then recorded on 2 sides of a single sheet of paper and sold for three shillings quarterly today occupies massive databases. The information can now be retrieved through newspapers, magazines, and directories or by a variety of electronic processes. But in essence, the modern business is still doing the same thing it was 270 years ago. Now as then, it remains the world's premier source of news and data on the maritime and transport markets.
