Description
The Sonoran Desert Bioregion, which extends from southwestern Arizona to northwest Sonora, is one of the largest primarily intact arid ecosystems in the world.
In the United States this includes over one million acres of Congressionally designated wilderness within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, the 2.8 million acre Tohono O’odham Nation, and the 2.6 million acre Barry M. Goldwater Gunnery Range.
In Mexico it encompasses the Biosphere Reserves of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve, a fragile volcanic cluster of gigantic craters abutted by mountainous sand dunes, as well as the threatened Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta.
