Aside from these towns there are a large number of villages, both small and large, spread over a large rural area of farming countryside.
This constituency is comprised of the District of North Wiltshire, except for Calne included in the Devizes division, and Cricklade included in the North Swindon division. It includes Ashton Keynes, Malmesbury, Wootton Bassett, Great Somerford, Hullavington, Lyneham, Chippenham, Lacock, Corsham and Box.
It was created as a division of Wiltshire in 1983, on the same boundaries as the previous Chippenham division, except for Toothill and Lydiard, which were transferred to the Swindon constituency. In 1997 Calne was transferred to the Devizes division, and Cricklade to the new North Swindon division.
