Joyce was born and raised in a small town in southern Minnesota. She came from a family of modest means, but her childhood was rich in many ways. Her father was a strong and loving man who taught her she could do anything she wanted if she worked hard enough. Her mother always said, "A gift from the heart is priceless." Her supportive husband Dan and precious daughter Calissa give her daily inspiration.
Loving memories, strong values, appreciation for things of the heart - these feelings are reflected in her verses today. As with many writers, pain has also provided its share of inspiration. The sudden loss of her sister Carol in 1983 was the catalyst that began her career as a poet. Joyce says, "Writing my thoughts and feelings on paper helped me grieve and understand life's ups and downs." She began writing poetry for various people and events in her life. Realizing that these special moments happen in the lives of many, she decided to share her heart. Her writing style offers a unique sensitivity to the realities of everyday life, along with a sense of humor to see "the light side" makes her poetry down to earth and relatable to so many of us.
