Japan Policy Research Institute

Description

JPRI was founded in 1994 by Chalmers Johnson and Steven C. Clemons to promote public education about Japan, its then growing significance in world affairs, and trans-Pacific international relations. Despite our name, it was never our intent to focus exclusively on Japan, and over the years JPRI has published many articles about China, Korea, southeast Asia, and inner Asia. JPRI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and all donations to it are fully tax deductible in the U.S. Our board and officers all serve without pay, and our web site is maintained with the generous assistance of the University of San Francisco's Center for the Pacific Rim.

In its initial years JPRI sponsored a number of conferences and public meetings that brought together scholars, government officials, journalists and business leaders. We also sent to subscribing members a monthly mailing of articles. These articles included Working Papers, Critiques, and Occasional Papers. Working Papers were research papers: either free-standing or chapters from forthcoming books or dissertations. Critiques were shorter "opinion" pieces, and Occasional Papers included more historical works, memoirs, or other "think" pieces. Over the years JPRI also distributed free of charge to its members a number of important books by George Hicks, Ivan Hall, and others.

Starting in late 2003, JPRI ceased to mail monthly articles to its members and switched exclusively to internet publication. Since its web site is open to all, JPRI no longer requires memberships; however, donations are gratefully accepted and are fully tax deductible.
