Description
KHYI was acquired by Metro Broadcasters, Inc. in 1994. It was bumped from 3000 watts to 6000 watts. Soon after, it jumped in strength to 25,000 watts and now (after long wait) 50,000 watts. On January 1, 1997 The Range began broadcasting “live” and introduced much of the DFW “Metromess” to the world of Robert Earl Keen, Townes Van Zandt, Pat Green, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and more – while still paying homage to earlier Country rebels icons: Johnny Cash, Waylon & Willie, Hank Sr., The Great Johnny Horton and many others.
The Country Music Industry had alienated so many fans by the “Great Garth Cloning Experiment of the 90’s,” that The Range seemed like a breath of fresh air. KHYI brought many listeners back to Country Radio.
We’ve moved south from Allen to Plano. We’ve gone from a few loyal listeners to tens of thousands. We’ve gone from not having a website (“what’s that?”) to having one of the most popular radio websites in America. All it took was a little bit of good taste in Country Music.
