Description
I have lived in Notting Hill since 1970, first in Portobello Road Notting Hill and for the last eighteen years at my London bed and breakfast. Having worked as a DJ, a petrol pump attendant, a landscape gardener, and for twenty five years in a family business in interior decoration, it was 1995 that I decided to start my Notting Hill bed and breakfast. My family business was established in this area in 1815 by my great, great grandfather. I live here with my dog, Sumi, a friendly German Shepherd and enjoy numerous sports including golf, horse riding, squash, tennis and windsurfing.
About the Neighbourhood
This Notting Hill bed and breakfast is located in what is described as London's most fashionable area. The film Notting Hill, a film starring a bumbling Englishman and a starry American actress, made a marked difference attracting London's hip and famous so in the past 30 or so years, Notting Hill has seen a massive transformation to the status it holds today.
Two centuries ago, the area was little more than wasteland. It was only in 1840 that the area became more residential with the construction of the Ladbroke and Norland estates. At that time, Notting Hill was either known as the Potteries (because of the nearby pottery works) or the Piggeries (after the three-to-one ratio of pigs to people). These large houses were carved up into multiple dwellings, and after World War II the area worsened to become slums.
