Kremlin had its earliest beginnings with James J. Hill's building of the Great Northern Railroad from Havre to Cut Bank across the northern part of Choteau County during the winter of 1890-1891. Kremlin is found at Latitude 47 degrees, 42 minutes and Longitude 112 degrees and 23 minutes, in Hill County, Montana. It is on the north side of Highway No. 2, the northern route across Montana known as The Hi-Line. Hill County was formally signed into being on Feb. May 19, 1910, Page 5 - Pocahontas County Sun, Laurens, Iowa: P. W. Bishop has taken a claim near Kremlin, Montana and will move to it just as soon as he can make arrangement to dispose of his property here. Mr. Bishop is very enthusiastic over the prospects in that section. His new location is a short distance from the Canada line. The soil is a rich chocolate loam and has all the appearance of the much advertised lands of western Canada.
Kremlin Montana banking activities in the early days included selling horses, harnesses, buicks, and crop insurance. The job of an Assistant Cashier included mopping the bank floor after a busy day in the horse business as just part of the job!

How Kremlin Montana Got Its Name: In 1890 when the Assistant Foreman on the Great Northern Railroad steel gang laying rails through the area saw the mirages formed by the Bears Paw Mountains, they reminded him of his native Russia.
Kremlin Montana Townsite's Title Abstract shows that the original 160 acre townsite was purchased from the Government on May 15, 1911, by Charles E Miller for $1.25 per acre, a total of $200.
Kremlin School's Bond Issue in 1936 for $22,000 to build and furnish a grade and high school, and gymnasium, paid 6% annual interest.
