There are opportunities to volunteer and visit the library for those interested in knowing these beautiful children; Cusco and its language, culture, and people. In a place where the illiteracy rate is at 82%, the library La Pagina en la Puerta, gives children a chance to cultivate the joy of reading; grow as people, realize their potential, and develop self esteem through reading in a positive and nurturing environment. Founded in December 2006 and formalized as an association in November 2008, the Association La Pagina en La Puerta – Una Biblioteca Juvenil (The Page in the Door – A Children/Youth Library) is a family formed and run non-profit association. It is made up of Amy Bakal, her husband Jose Luis Ugarte de Souza, and her daughter Rachel Rose Reida. The library associates are unsalaried.

All donations are used to cover the costs of paying the library’s teachers, the development of new programs for the children, and to buy new books, games, and materials for the children to enjoy and benefit from at the library. Additionally, donations are used to help cover the costs for recruiting volunteers, provide on-site support for volunteers, for all correspondence, legal and accounting services.
