About us
Our role is to review local government structure and boundaries in England and report back with recommendations to the Electoral Commission. Our aim is to ensure that the number of electors represented by each councilor in an area is as nearly as possible the same, while taking into account local circumstances. We can recommend changes to:
We carried out an eight year programme of Periodic Electoral Reviews (PERs) covering all local authorities in England which finished in 2004. In addition, we are carrying out Further Electoral Reviews (FERs) on some local authorities in England. If requested, we can also review parish and town councils.
The Boundary Committee for England is a statutory committee of the Electoral Commission, which took on the functions of the Local Government Commission for England in 2001. An Electoral Commissioner chairs the Committee and the other four members are Deputy Electoral Commissioners.
