I never saw that Jim Carrey flick, but being able to erase selective memories sure does sound intriguing. You know what I would do with that power? Erase my memories from all my favorite books. I’m always so jealous when I’m raving about a book to someone and find out they haven’t read it. It’s always nice to read a book again and again, like a well-worn friend, but oh, to recapture that excitement and wonder and magic of the first time.
I’d gather all my favorite books into a pile, get the memories erased, and then have the best reading days of my life. Of course, would reading them at a different time in my life change my opinion of them? Could Huck Finn’s adventures be as powerful without the fiery passion of childhood to guide them? Could Anne Shirley still promise to take me away forever to a place where everything is beautiful and everyone is happy, if I don’t quite believe in that ideal anymore?
When I was a kid, I loved a certain kind of book character, like Max in Where the Wild Things Are. When he bellows “I’ll eat you up!” to his mother, I was always thinking “Aw, sweet…” I liked the delinquents, the punks, and it doesn’t take an advanced degree to figure out the effect they had on me growing up, or on the adult I eventually became, sort of.
