About the national local government organisations

The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national voice for local authorities and works alongside a range of partner organisations to promote better local government. These organisations, which are known as the Central Bodies (so called because these eight bodies are funded nationally from ‘top-sliced' Revenue Support Grant) provide services for the benefit of local authorities generally.

Each has a distinct and unique role - with individual expertise and specialisms – but all have a common purpose. To support local authorities to provide the best possible services for the communities that they serve.

www.local.gov.uk was established by the LGA to offer a single access point for members and officers in English local authorities to the range of support and services available from the national organisations. However, it should be noted that some of the central bodies also provide services to local authorities in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - these three countries being represented by their own national associations - the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA); Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), and Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA).
