Virtual Manchester first went live at the end of 1993, one of the first city sites to go on line on the world wide web.
At that time we felt we'd done well if we could attract 1000 hits to the site on a weekly basis, for at this stage traffic on the web in UK was limited to a handful of academics and students.
By mid 1997, VirtualManchester.co.uk was attracting 60,000 hits per week. The site had grown to 1300 pages and visitors were accessing the site from all over the world. About 1,5 million people in the UK now had access to the world wide web.
