Maurice Blackburn Cashman was formed with the 1999 merger between Melbourne based Maurice Blackburn and Co and Sydney based Cashman and Partners. Parliamentarian and lawyer Maurice McCrae Blackburn founded Maurice Blackburn and Co in 1921.
Maurice Blackburn was born in Victoria on 9 November 1880 and founded the firm of Maurice Blackburn & Co in 1921. Initially he concentrated on trade union law and was an early champion of women’s rights and cases involving civil liberty.
The firm has successfully litigated many landmark cases. These include the 1998 Waterfront dispute representing the Maritime Union of Australia and Australia’s largest ever shareholder class action, the $97 million plus costs settlement against GIO in 2003.
