Description

Ralph Hazel, Jr. is a professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Delaware Technical Institute, a Chesapeake and Delaware Canal historian, and the fourth generation of his family to ply the waters of the Chesapeake in a workboat. An experienced waterman, Capt. Hazel's first experiences with the C&D canal were with his father aboard the tug Convoy, which operated from Town Point dock at the western entrance to the canal, assisting shipping traffic and recording ship's information along the canal.

Hazel's great-grandfather, Capt. Jacob Truss, operated the wooden steam tug Wistar out of Chesapeake City for Back Creek Towing Company, towing barges back and forth through the canal. During his lifetime he witnessed Civil War battles while operating a tug along the Potomac.
