To begin with – 6 SIGMA is probably not a good name for a Business Quality Methodology that has become easily the most important quality initiative in late 90s (and for some big companies definitely the most expensive one). Why the name is not so good? In fact what everyone means by 6SIGMA – 3.4 defects per 1,000,000 opportunities is only 4.5 Sigma. And by means of a small trick or assumption (NEVER assume – you will hear this too often from the same 6S trainers) it becomes 6 Sigma. Major goal of ANY 6S project is to reduce variations. Reducing the variation brings $$ of cost savings ( COPQ ). Confusing isn’t it? Yes but it works – and it is SIMPLE.
